Our Brisbane Coffee Tour in April 2016 was our first midweek tour and featured Woolloongabba and East Brisbane coffee roasters. On the agenda was coffee roasting, coffee cupping and alternate brew methods.
We began at the Woolloongabba Social Club home of Coffee Supreme Brisbane. Josh has been hosting Brisbane Coffee tours since the inaugural in 2012. Like always he had some super single origin green bean and got a volunteer to help him roast it. We all had a bag of Ethiopia Dumerso coffee beans (brown ones) to take home.
Second stop was Abrisca in East Brisbane. Sherrie and Steph took us on a quick tour of the roastery and then upstairs to the cupping room. First task was to taste different varieties of apples to get a sense of sweetness and acidity. We then cupped six coffees including one that had been half roasted.
The apple activity helped to identify flavours, the half roast reminded us of peanuts and the Green Bean Brown Ale at our Christmas Brew Fest. Food and refreshments kindly provided by Thrive on George saw us on our way back to Woolloongabba.
Black Sheep Coffee was our final destination. Emma had a cold drip single origin coffee ready for us on arrival which went down a treat after the short walk. We were then educated on using pour over and AeroPress methods to make filtered coffee.
Emma matched single origin coffee to her preferred brew method based on flavour characteristics. The cupping experience at Abrisca started to prove useful already.
