Strauss in the CBD has long been on our Coffee Shop Target List and is home of the Qld Barista champ. We were well overdue to get our beanhinds down there. Strauss is part of the Josh Russell café family and seems to be a most refined member.
The entire experience is refined … from walking through the door, to the warm interior, to the cups and finally to the ambience. Music softly plays from vinyl on a turntable, reminiscent of some of our New York experiences. Wait staff are friendly and knowledgeable taking time to go through the coffee menu and provide the tasting notes. Barista champ Adam meticulously prepares coffee through the morning storm of customers and maintains a steady ship behind the Kees van der Westen Spirit Triplette.
After hearing the menu who could go past the, ‘We’ve got a really rare one – It’s $10!’ This was a secret squirrel coffee specially sourced by Coffee Supreme for its 21st Birthday. It was a filter roasted Geisha from Panama Finca Lerida. Adam took the time to pour over the Kalita Wave and beautifully present the brew to the table. This coffee had many layers of lime, mango and finished with cocoa.
The success of the Josh Russell coffee family is that he frequents his cafés and the cafés that serve his coffee. Today we were fortunate as he was on the floor and answering questions. New to Strauss was cold brewed coffee freshly bottled and made with a Toddy Cold Brew using the much-loved Five Star Day blend. We also reminisced with Josh about the City Bus coffee tour and got an invite to the 21st birthday celebrations.
It was time for espresso and how exciting to have one made from the best barista in Queensland. On offer was a single origin from El Salvador. Adam said it was full-bodied when prepared black. We had long macchiatos and a shlong. They had great depth of flavour reminding us of honeycomb … maybe even a violet crumble.
We must have been having a good time because we ordered a third round of coffees. Coffee Supreme’s Five Star Day blend arrived in long macchiato, magic and shlong. We all enjoyed our coffee in an environment where the front of shop is a rush with commuters, but sitting down we felt calm and refined.
Strauss in the CBD offers barista champs, Coffee Supreme and a refined environment for coffee drinking, a must visit if you are in the CBD.
