We have tried signature blends at Evo Espresso and The Burrow that were prepared with, and air roasted by, The Coffee Roaster in West End. Now it was time to experience the coffee at the source. We headed to Anthony St off Montague Rd to find, the ‘head office’, premises was a good fusion of cafe and roastery. The cafe area is best described as simple but comfortable – with a kiddies corner. A big thumbs up from one bean brewder!
The really cool thing is that there is a small airflow roaster in the cafe, a brand new addition to the experience. You can now walk in, choose from a range of green beans, create your own blend, or go with a single origin, and roast your own beans. 15 minutes later you walk out with a bag of beans where you controlled the roast – way cool! Otherwise, you can buy pre-roasted organic and standard beans, including the locally roasted Choc-covered coffee beans.
No time to roast for us, it was time to test out the Broadway blend that comprises of 5 beans from sources in Africa and South America. Liz was a friendly and skilled barista who loved a chat and knew her stuff – both about the coffee and the roasting process. We started with a flat white and a mocha. The blend provided a good flavoursome coffee across the palette with a smooth finish. We were mesmerized by the coffee beans swirling in the air roaster and the rich, yet smooth, coffee flavour. We decided, that although no single origin was available, we would have another of the Broadway. This time a latte and long macchiato. The coffees were very hot on delivery – caught us by surprise and probably detracted from the experience. By the second cup, there was a huge crowd lining for coffee and two baristas on the WEGA Green Line machine to cope with demand.
The Airflow roasting provides an interesting slant to the roasting process, as no bean stays still in the roaster. Apparently, this offers a more consistent roast whereas in a drum roaster, the beans on the outside are often darker roasted than the ones in the middle. The owner of The Coffee Roaster designs the airflow roasters and writes the software. The aim is a consistent roast time and time again. It is a more scientific, rather than intuition based, approach to roasting. Yet another coffee roasting and coffee drinking experience in the West End that is well worth the visit.
