On December 15 2012 Bean Brewding and Yelp joined forces to bring the Bean Brewding Inaugural Coffee Tour. The Tour is aimed at people who appreciate coffee and want to get inside information from coffee growers, roasters and barista’s. The coffee appreciation group was made up of Brisbane Food bloggers, Yelpers (those who partake in Yelp events) and Bean Hunters (those who scour Brisbane for the perfect coffee).

The day kicked off at PUK Espresso with Richard from Green Cauldron. Richard talked about growing and processing coffee in Byron Bay and gave us insight into how he runs his plantation. We got to taste single origin beans from his region as a pour over and take a sample home for ourselves. Antonia fueled us with some of PUK’s famous bagels and muesli – yummo, we were ready to go!

With knowledge of coffee growing, Byron-style, under our belts it was time to visit a coffee roaster. The hire bus kindly sponsored by Vroom Vroom Vroom took us to Cup Roastery. Cup Specialty Coffee is carefully roasted by Josh and on this day one lucky Yelper got to do it for him. Josh talked us through the roasting and critical factors needed to produce an Ethiopian single origin for filtered coffee. We tasted as a pour over and all got to bag our own freshly roasted beans to take home. To finish, Josh served up our favourite style of espresso on the Ethiopian so we could get another opinion of this wonderful bean.

The buzz was on, we were on the bus and headed to Uncle Joe’s Coffee House. Mark is chief roaster and Adam is super barista and together they delivered a sensory sensation. Mark talked about tasting coffee and to think of colours because they offer a third dimension. We tasted black and white versions of a Kenya Kamwangi AA, Yirgy Bear as a piccolo and a Columbia Granja La Esperanza as white iced coffee. The talk around the tables inspired by Mark and his coffee journey was about appreciation, popcorn roasting and AeroPress purchasing.

As the bus returned us back to Kangaroo Point we all thought the Tour was a success and could not wait for the next one. More of the Tour’s action can be viewed on Twitter #bbcoffeetour.
